Beyond Expected: Building Greater Depth Writers in Year 5 and 6

Designed to demystify the greater depth standard in writing at the end of Key Stage 2, enabling teachers to develop a clear and confident understanding of what greater depth truly looks like. 

Drawing on STA materials, the KS2 Teacher Assessment Framework, writing framework guidance and current moderator insight, this course will support Year 5 and 6 teachers, English or writing leads to identify the key features of greater depth writing and understand how these are consistently demonstrated across a range of writing contexts. 

Participants will explore how to tweak planning, teaching sequences and classroom practice to create meaningful opportunities for pupils to meet the full range of greater depth statements.

Learning Outcome

With a strong emphasis on practical application, the course will focus on securing precision, control, form and independence in writing so that more pupils are able to achieve greater depth by the end of Year 6.

  • Creating opportunities: ensuring pupils can demonstrate the full range of statements 
  • Developing writer craft: precision, cohesion, manipulation of language and authorial voice 
  • Assessment in practice: making secure and accurate judgement
