We are a welcoming and ambitious primary special school supporting children aged 2 to 11 with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) and Complex Autism (ASD). At Millstead School, we aim to provide a world-class education for all pupils which transforms their lives and the lives of their families. We have 314 pupils on roll based in the Everton (L5) and Naylorsfield (L27) areas of the city. All pupils have an education, health and care plan (EHCP) which recognises their severe and complex needs. The teacher vacancies are on both sites.
Our “extraordinary and ambitious” curriculum follows 3 distinct learning pathways:
➢ Cohort 1: Pre-Formal learners with complex autism or profound & multiple learning difficulties (including complex physical and/or medical needs). These pupils are below Pre-Key Stage Standards and are working within the Engagement Model;
➢ Cohort 2: Pre-Formal learners who are in the Early Years. These pupils are also below Pre-Key Stage Standards and are working within the Engagement Model. For many of these children, joining the Millstead family will be their first experience of an educational setting;
➢ Cohort 3: Semi-Formal learners in Key Stage 1 and 2. These pupils are working within Pre-Key Stage Standard in English and Maths.

Job Description: Class Teacher. This job description may be amended at any time, following consultation between the Head Teacher and Teacher, and will be reviewed annually.
Purpose of the job: To provide a high equality educational experience for all children.

Functionally responsible to: Head of School/Cohort Lead
Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities:
1. To carry out the duties of a school teacher as set out in the ‘School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions’ document 2024 School teachers’ pay and conditions document 2025 and guidance on school teachers’ pay and conditions (valid from 1 September 2025) (publishing.service.gov.uk) (and subsequent publications).
2. To continue to meet the required standards for Qualified Teacher Status Teachers' standards - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).
3. To be committed to the values, ethos and continuing success of the school.
Knowledge and Understanding:
• Understand how pupils’ learning is affected by their physical, intellectual, emotional and social development.
• Understand the stages of child development and make all necessary adaptations to meet these, and to address the needs identified in their Education, Health and Care Plan.
• Understand how to effectively promote spiritual, moral, social and cultural education with pupils who have severe learning difficulties and complex autism.
• Select and make good use of ICT skills for classroom and management support.
• Be aware of and support the schools’ current systems and structures as outlined in policy documents including the Child Protection Policy.
• Understand and know how data can be used to set clear targets for pupils’ achievement.
Planning, Teaching and Class Management:
• Provide clear structures for lessons and for sequences of lessons, which maintain pace, motivation and challenge.
• Be an enthusiastic classroom leader with presence, energy and a sense of humour.
• Set high standards and be an effective role model for pupils and other staff members.
• Make effective use of assessment information on pupils’ progress and achievement and in planning future lessons.
• Ensure effective teaching of whole classes, groups and individual, establishing high expectations of behaviour and achievement, so that learning objectives are met.
• Use a variety of teaching and learning styles to motivate and keep all pupils engaged.
• Evaluate own teaching critically to improve effectiveness.
• Manage and lead a team of additional needs support assistants to ensure that they are deployed effectively, and school policies and procedures are followed appropriately.
Monitoring, Assessment, Recording, Reporting and Accountability
• Assess and record each pupil’s progress systematically with reference to the school’s current practice, including the social and emotional progress of each child and use the results to inform planning.
• Annotate pupils’ work and learning journey books, providing sufficient information to set future targets.
• Provide reports on individual progress to the Head Teacher, parents and Local Authority as required.

• Be able to prioritise and manage own time effectively, particularly in relation to balancing the demands made by admin duties, teaching and working collaboratively with colleagues.
• Be an effective leader by directing and co-ordinating the work of support staff.

- Up-do-date knowledge of augmentative and assisted communication methods to develop receptive and expressive language skills within a total communication environment.
- Demonstrate a sound understanding of the philosophy of play-based learning, planning and delivering effective holistic learning opportunities.
- Consistently and effectively use a range of strategies for teaching and classroom management.
- Be able to lead and inspire a class team.
- Be able to monitor holistic development and progress.
Desirable Experience
- Evidence of working closely with parents & families and responding to their needs.
- Experience of working with mainstream and other schools to maximise inclusion opportunities.
- Evidence of working closely with other professionals.
